Mission Assignments

I was going through some of my other old gaming gear the other day and ran across a cool book from my Twilight 2000 collection. I spent many hours running a Twilight campaign back in the late 80s and it was a great game. I wondered if maybe there was something that would be useful to the Recon game I was working on in there somewhere.

Besides finding numerous useful maps, I ran acroos the "Mission Assignments" table from the RDF sourcebook. I am including it below with a few mods/notes to make it adaptable to the 'Nam setting. So, if you need some inspiration for that next op, or all your players show up one night and force you to MD a session at gunpoint, you'll have a quick and dirty way to start out their adventure. I offer an honored salute to the now defunct GDW and the great games they made over there.

MISSION ASSIGNMENTS (2D6)
Use the Regular Ops table for your conventional forces, just the every day grunts and groundpounders. The Special Ops table of course is for all those SEALs, Force Recon, Special Forces and other operators out there.

Result Descriptions:

ADVISOR - The characters are acting as a group of advisors to ARVN forces or indigs. The MD should determine an actual mission for the team (roll again or use your imagination). Be sure to play up cultural and linguistic barriers, and the fact that even the most "elite" of ARVN troops can run at the most inopportune moment.

ESCORT - The characters are assigned as drivers and/or guards for a convoy. The MD should determine what the convoy is carrying, where it is going and whether or not it is attacked. Vehicle breakdowns or running over a mine or two can cause some interesting complications especially if the characters are camped out on top of their M-113 because it's so hot inside when the VC sniper starts shooting...

OUTPOST - The characters have been assigned to a forward outpost of their unit. Once there, they will act as observers and conduct local patrols within a 10 klick radious. They may even need to monitor radio traffic (and you thought playing the RTO was boring...). Stealth is the key here, because big firefights expose outposts. Expect the sarge to chew on you good if you get trigger happy.

PATROL - The category covers a number of missions. The MD rolls 1D6 again on the table below:

1-4 Probe : Go to a specific objective and gather info on enemy activities there. Contact should be avoided, the mission is to observe.

5 Prisoners : Take one or more enemy prisoners and bring them back for interrogation.

6 Ambush : Set up positions to ambush enemy patrols. The MD decides if any enemy walk into the ambush.

RAID - The characters are assigned to raid an enemy installation or convoy.

RECON - The characters are assigned to do a deep penetration of enemy lines. This may be combined with a raid, although the mission is usually of a more covert/info gathering nature. Stealth is paramount, as the team may be so far behind enemy lines, no other air support or artillery is available to bail them out.

SECURITY - The characters are assigned to guard a base camp, supply dump, etc. Typical time is for about a week. Be sure and remember, most such missions result in no contact, so wait for just the right moment when the characters are getting complacent and send in the sappers.

NOTE - Remember to let a few missions go without event. That way, the characters never really know what to expect. Throw in some things other than just the enemy. Their jeep gets stuck in the mud. A group of water buffalo are blocking the road and won't move. You get the idea. Use vibrant imagery, and remind them of the discomfort of humping through the bush with several pounds of gear, water, guns and ammo on their backs.

I hope this provides some help for your games. I'll keep looking for more useful things.
